Sony Pictures released the official trailer for Prima Facie, a legal drama set to open in UK and Irish cinemas on Nov. 13. The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Tessa Ensler, a successful defense barrister who defends men accused of sexual assault. Her professional perspective shifts after she is assaulted by a fellow barrister named Julian, a role played by Daniel Ings.
Directed by Susanna White and written by Suzie Miller, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. The story follows Tessa as she confronts the legal process she previously used to defend clients. Miller expanded the narrative beyond the limits of the original one-woman stage play for the screen adaptation. The theatrical version previously starred Jodie Comer in London and Broadway productions.
Miller and Erivo discussed the film's goal of sparking conversations about sexual violence, consent, and the legal system. Erivo's portrayal of Tessa explores aspects of the character's identity and life outside the courtroom that were not present in the stage version. The actress also serves as an executive producer on the project.
The supporting cast includes Noma Dumezweni, Toheeb Jimoh, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau, and Harry Treadaway. The film is scheduled for a wide release in the United Kingdom and Ireland beginning next month.
