Three distinct projects have linked the Bacon family to Mountain Lake PBS since 2012. The latest effort, a feature on musician Michael Bacon, premieres this week on the station’s program, Mountain Lake Journal. Producer Paul Larson and cinematographer Daniel McCullum filmed the piece to showcase the new composition, It’s an Adirondack Thing.

The song originated after the Adirondack Museum invited Michael Bacon to perform several tracks at their summer Music Fest. The request inspired him to write a new piece specifically for the occasion. Larson and McCullum captured the story behind that creation for the upcoming broadcast.

This release follows a 2024 collaboration where Michael Bacon and his brother, actor Kevin Bacon, contributed to the documentary Songs to Keep: Treasures of an Adirondack Folk Collector. The duo arranged and performed a track titled My Adirondack Home for that project. The song allowed them to explore their connection to the Adirondacks, a region they visit frequently during the summer months.

Larsen praised the brothers' contribution to the earlier documentary. “The Bacon Brothers were extremely generous with their talents while we recorded My Adirondack Home for the documentary,” Larson said. “Even though the song was decades old, it sounded contemporary. They made it their own.”

The partnership between the Bacons and the station began in the summer of 2012. Their first joint effort was a Spotlight segment featuring interview clips and concert footage. That series remains supported by the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, which works to improve the quality of life for year-round residents of the Adirondack Park. Hill and Hollow Music also provides support for the Spotlight program.
