Polling places across Burlington and the rest of Vermont opened at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Voters have until 7 p.m. to cast ballots in the general election. The day's biggest contest pits incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott against Democrat and Progressive Amanda Janoo. Scott seeks a record setting sixth consecutive term. Janoo aims to become the first person in 64 years to unseat an incumbent governor.

The lieutenant governor race features Democrat Molly Gray challenging Republican incumbent John Rodgers. Gray previously held the office until 2023. Vermonters will also choose their representative in the U.S. House of Representatives. Democrat Becca Balint, the current incumbent, faces Republican Gerald Malloy and independent Adam Ortiz.

Beyond the top of the ticket, ballots include four other statewide offices. Voters will fill all 180 seats in the state Senate and House of Representatives. County level races for state's attorneys and sheriffs are also on the ballot for four year terms.

Two proposed amendments to the Vermont Constitution will be decided by the public. A series of local decisions will also be put to a vote in various municipalities.

The Vermont Public candidate guide tool helps residents find their specific polling place. It also allows voters to review the names on their individual ballots. Accessibility details and voter rights information are available for those needing assistance.

Election results will be posted as returns come in. The outcome of the gubernatorial race will determine whether Scott continues his long tenure or Janoo breaks a six decade streak.
