Flo Meiler continues to compete on the track at age 91. The Shelburne resident holds two world records in the pole vault and triple jump.

Medals line the walls of her home. Most of the hardware is gold, with a smaller number of silver awards. Meiler began competing at age 60 after friend Barbara Jordan convinced her to try the long jump at the Vermont Senior Games. Jordan died a decade ago.

Meiler said she misses Jordan. She also noted that she is sad she cannot jump as well as before, but she still enjoys the sport. Other athletes often approach her to say she inspires them. Meiler described the feeling as warm.

University of Vermont freshman Jason Lei told Meiler he wants to move like her when he is older. Meiler said the comment makes her feel like she is 60 again. Gene Meiler, her husband of 65 years, said his wife impressed him before they married.

Flo Meiler said she is happy to keep running. When she notices a decline in speed, she adds more exercises. She credited her health and talent to God.

Meiler said she feels warm inside when athletes share that she has been an inspiration to them. She continues to compete in track and field events from her home base in Shelburne.
