A new walk-in urgent care center dedicated to mental health conditions will open in Rutland in March 2027. The facility is designed to provide immediate medical assistance for individuals experiencing a crisis, offering an alternative to the standard emergency room setting.
Rutland Mental Health secured Rural Health Transformation grant money to build the new site. The organization currently serves approximately 3,500 individuals across Rutland County. The new location will be situated inside the existing emergency services building, adjacent to the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Loree Zeif of Rutland Mental Health stated that the goal is to give families a specific destination when a crisis occurs. "I hope for family members of people who are mentally ill, they’ll know that there’s a place they can call and they can bring someone to help them in the moment," Zeif said. The center will offer walk-in services for adults every day. The organization plans to expand services to include families and children after the first year of operation.
Zeif compared the new service to how residents handle minor physical ailments. "If you need a couple of stitches, you might not any longer go to an emergency room. You might go to an urgent care. If you have the flu, you might go to an urgent care," Zeif explained. By creating a specialized space, organizers aim to reduce the load on local police and the hospital’s emergency department.
Dr. Alison Davis of the Rutland Regional Medical Center noted that the emergency room is not always the optimal environment for mental health treatment. "It can be a stressful location, especially for somebody who’s experiencing a mental health challenge," Davis said. She added that many patients who are hesitant to visit the emergency room may be more willing to seek help at a lower-barrier option. Proximity to the hospital allows for quick transfer if a patient’s condition worsens.
Leaders at Rutland Mental Health said the new center is not the first of its kind in Vermont. The team plans to visit other similar facilities in the state to gather insights on operational challenges before opening their doors in March 2027.
