Netflix Unveils Trailer for FTX Drama 'The Altruists'

Netflix released the first trailer for The Altruists on Monday. The eight-episode limited drama stars Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried. The series will premiere on Nov. 19.

The show depicts the rise and collapse of FTX and Alameda Research. Alameda Research was the trading firm led by Ellison. It was closely tied to Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency empire. Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud and conspiracy. He is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence. Ellison cooperated with prosecutors and served time in prison after the company failed.

The trailer follows the two characters as they attempt to reshape the financial system using cryptocurrency. They also pursue effective altruism. Their professional and romantic relationship becomes complicated as the company faces financial problems. Accusations involve billions of dollars in customer funds.

Graham Moore created the series and co-showruns it with Jacqueline Hoyt. Moore said the drama looks at how the pair's desire to do good became mixed with serious wrongdoing. The cast includes Alex Lawther, Karan Soni, Madison Hu, Naomi Okada, Matt Rife, and Eugene Young. Paul Reiser, Robin Weigert, Jennifer Grey, and Hudson Williams make additional appearances.

Barack and Michelle Obama executive produced the project through Higher Ground Productions. James Ponsoldt and Julia Garner are also listed as executive producers. The series is available to view on Netflix starting Nov. 19.
