A youth football championship game at Madison Senior High School ended in violence on Sunday night, leaving one person dead and three others injured. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. in a facility that was not hosting an event organized by the school district.
The shooting began during the match, which was unrelated to the Madison school system. Medical teams responded to the scene where the fourth victim succumbed to injuries. The three surviving injured parties were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The district reacted to the tragedy by suspending classes for Monday. Instruction is scheduled to resume on Wednesday. Administrators indicated that counseling and support services will be available to students and staff during the interim period.
In a written statement, the district expressed deep sadness over the event. Officials noted that although the game was not sponsored by the school, the violence impacts the entire school community. They emphasized the need for support across the district.
The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has taken charge of the investigation. Lt. Andrew Pierson, the squad's public information officer, appealed to the public for information. He stated that witnesses might have seen, recorded, or heard details that could advance the case.
Pierson noted that a single photo, short video, or minor detail could be valuable. He added that witnesses do not need the complete story to be helpful. Authorities have set up a command post at 618-709-7750 and accept tips through CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
