Tessa Von Fange gave birth to her daughter, Morgan, at 1:16 a.m. on Nov. 3, just hours after casting her vote at the Shawnee County Elections Office in Topeka, Kan.
The newborn weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce. Von Fange, a longtime voter, said she had expected to attend her scheduled induction after Election Day. She stated she had already decided against having the baby before that date.
Labor began during her visit to the polling place. Her husband, Chris Von Fange, said an election worker informed him his wife was in labor. He described the moment as shocking and overwhelming, noting that the news raised millions of questions.
Von Fange said she remained in denial until her water broke. The couple had selected the baby’s name prior to the trip. Von Fange noted that the name was Morgan, adding that she briefly considered the name Chad if the baby were a boy.
After voting, Von Fange received a sticker for future voters. She placed the sticker on her belly and wore it to the hospital. Chris Von Fange said the experience reinforced the couple’s belief that everyone should make time to vote. He said there is always a half-hour available to go to a polling place and cast a ballot.
Von Fange said she has missed very few elections in her life. As she has gotten older, she said she does not miss them at all. The baby was born two days after the election, on Nov. 3, which was Tuesday.
