Clear skies and radiational cooling will push temperatures down sharply tonight across northern New York and Vermont, with St. Johnsbury forecast to reach 19 degrees Wednesday morning. That would be 3 degrees colder than the record of 22 degrees set there in 1999.
Most locations will settle into the low 20s, with some spots in northern New York and Vermont dipping toward the upper teens. Higher terrain will hold in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees, where a temperature inversion will keep mountain locations milder than the valleys below.
Burlington is forecast to reach 25 degrees Wednesday morning. That remains 6 degrees above the city's daily record of 19 degrees, set in 1974. Montpelier is expected to drop to 21 degrees, a few degrees above its record low of 19 degrees from 1999. Records in Burlington, Massena and Plattsburgh are not expected to fall. Saranac Lake is forecast to reach 20 degrees, far above its daily record of 2 degrees, set in 1903.
The Channel 3 First Alert Weather team said it will track the cold tonight and the possibility of a new record low in St. Johnsbury. The forecast calls for a low of 19 degrees in St. Johnsbury on Wednesday morning.
