Providence basketball is entering a new era under head coach Bryan Hodgson, and the program has secured its first major recruiting class piece. Lewis Uvwo, a five-star center from Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, announced his commitment to the Friars on Wednesday. The announcement came via CBS Sports HQ, where Uvwo selected Providence over offers from Kentucky, Baylor, and Cal.
The signing represents a high-profile addition for the 2027 recruiting cycle. 247Sports ranks Uvwo as the No. 7 overall player in the class and the highest-rated center in that group. For Hodgson, this is the first season at the helm of the Friars. Landing a top-ten national prospect in his initial hiring year marks an immediate step up for the program's recruiting profile.
Uvwo is the third five-star recruit in Providence history under the 247Sports era. He joins Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn, both of whom committed in 2012, as the highest-ranked players to sign with the school. This distinction places the current class on par with the program's most celebrated past commitments.
The player cited the program's culture and personal connection as primary factors in his decision. "What stood out to me about Providence were the people, the culture, and the way they made me feel throughout the whole process," Uvwo told 247Sports. He noted that the staff believed in him as a person, not just an athlete, and that he wanted a place where he could grow and help build something special.
Uvwo also pointed to Hodgson's coaching history as a deciding factor. "Coach Hodgson separated himself through his craft and the fact that he has always been a winner," the recruit said. He expressed confidence in the coach's vision for the program and the role Uvwo will play in its success.
Scouting reports emphasize Uvwo's physical attributes and defensive potential. Adam Finklestein, the director of scouting for 247Sports, describes Uvwo as an elite defensive prospect. He stands 6-foot-10 with a wingspan near 7-foot-6 and weighs 225 pounds. Finklestein notes that Uvwo combines massive length with quick reactions and high motor, allowing him to flip his hips and recover for secondary jumps.
The Friars are operating within a Tier 4 budget range of $12.1 million to $15 million. This financial tier groups Providence with other Big East rivals such as Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova, and Marquette, as well as power-conference programs like UCLA, Ohio State, and Alabama. The signing of Uvwo positions the Friars to compete for top talent within that budget bracket.
