DOGE Cuts Stall 9/11 Health Aid
HHS plans to rehire 37 staff to clear a backlog of medical claims for survivors.

The World Trade Center Health Program is facing a backlog of claims after federal staffing cuts reduced its workforce. Survivors of the September 11 attacks report delays in receiving medical screenings and cancer treatments. A federal agency recently told lawmakers that the program has received approval to restore its staff to full capacity.
Earlier this year, an investigation found that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had cut positions within the program. Critics stated that these reductions left the agency undermanned and created a queue of unresolved health cases. The cuts forced many 9/11 survivors to wait longer for necessary medical care.
In April, the Department of Health and Human Services informed members of Congress about the staffing plan. The agency said it is approved to fully staff up to 120 total positions. To reach that number, the department intends to rehire 37 employees who were previously let go.
The program assists 9/11 survivors who are battling serious health issues linked to the event. Advocates have questioned the pace of hiring since the initial cuts. The current delay affects the timeline for processing new medical claims and scheduling appointments.
The Mississippi River Delta spans roughly 2.7 million acres and includes the largest area of brackish marsh on the North American continent. The region supports wetlands, fisheries, and wildlife habitat. It also serves as a key flyway for migrating birds.

A separate study found that the number of school bus drivers in the U.S. fell nearly 10% between August 2019 and August 2025. The count dropped from 223,252 to 202,076.
