WASHINGTON, D.C. Democratic leaders in Washington are preparing a legislative and oversight agenda focused on reducing consumer costs after voters flipped long-held Republican seats across the country.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York described the election results as a generational remake of the Senate map. He pointed to victories in states that Democrats had previously considered untouchable. The party now controls key committee chairs that will shape the next legislative session.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin said voters responded to messages about affordability. He also said the results served as a rebuke to President Donald Trump. In an interview on Capitol Hill, Martin said voters were telling the president to get off his ass and do something to help the country.

Martin stated that the top priority for the new majority is delivering on economic promises. The party plans to roll back tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Leaders also aim to reverse federal cuts to social safety nets, specifically targeting recent legislation that reduced Medicaid and SNAP benefits to fund tax cuts.

Foreign policy will also be a central focus. Democratic lawmakers plan to use legislative maneuvers to force an end to the ongoing war in Iran. They intend to pair this policy work with investigations into alleged corruption within the executive branch.

Martin said the party can deliver on its agenda while holding officials accountable. He described the current administration as having massive corruption. He stopped short of endorsing formal impeachment proceedings against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who faces questions over the handling of the Iran conflict. Martin said Hegseth will be held accountable.

The new leadership structure allows Democrats to pursue these goals simultaneously. They will use their committee positions to launch investigations while advancing bills on healthcare and tariffs.
