The Burlington City Council voted 9-3 on Monday night to pause consideration of a public safety resolution. The measure, which addresses security in the downtown area, will not be finalized until at least December 7. Instead of a direct vote, councilors established a temporary group to review the proposal further.

This ad hoc committee will consist of the mayor, the council president, and two caucus chairs. They are tasked with reporting their findings back to the full body before the next scheduled hearing. The three-month-old measure was introduced by Democratic councilors to tackle public safety issues in the city center.

Progressive councilors have opposed the proposal for months, arguing it may create more problems than it solves. Residents shared their views during the public comment period at the Monday session. The delay has drawn sharp criticism from some members of the council who feel the process lacks clarity.

Progressive Councilor Melo Grant questioned the utility of the new group. She stated, “I want to have an understanding so what we’ve had and what we’ve talked about is a lack of communications, a lack of coordination and a lack of due diligence from some committees. So what is this committee going to report back on.”

Ben Traverse, the Democratic Council President, offered a different perspective on the timeline. He warned that rushing the item could lead to a stalemate. “Pushing this to a final vote is teeing up a showdown where if I was in the Mayor’s shoes I will veto this resolution where it stands right now and then it goes nowhere,” Traverse said.
