Oklahoma’s offense remained stagnant on Saturday, falling 42-25 to South Carolina in a game that exposed persistent execution issues.

The Sooners trailed 28-10 at halftime after completing just 7 of 12 passes for 25 yards in the first half. Penalty yards exceeded offensive yards by intermission, and the team’s only score came from an interception return for a touchdown by Kip Lewis.

This result extends a difficult stretch for the program. The team is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SEC. Under head coach Brent Venables, the Sooners are one game over .500 in conference play over his tenure. They face the risk of a third losing season in five years if they cannot finish strongly.

Venables hired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle after the 2024 season to improve the unit. Arbuckle brought quarterback John Mateer from Washington State. While the team reached the College Football Playoff last year, that success relied heavily on a stingy defense rather than consistent offensive production. In the final four games before the playoff round last November, the Sooners finished 25 of 47 offensive possessions with punts, five with turnovers, and one on downs.

Those inefficiencies have carried into the current campaign. Before Saturday’s game, Oklahoma ranked 120th nationally with a 34.1% three-and-out rate according to TruMedia. The team sat at the bottom of the SEC in total offense and rushing offense, while ranking 15th in scoring offense. These metrics are worse than last season’s figures.

The pattern of stalling continued on Saturday. The Sooners scored only three points in their first eight offensive possessions. A fourth-quarter surge included two touchdown passes from Mateer to Ivan Carreon, who scored for the first time this season. Mateer finished 26-of-43 passing for 244 yards, though much of that production occurred after the outcome was determined.

Venables cited a lack of execution and explosive plays after the game, mirroring comments made in previous losses. The team had similar struggles in a loss to Kentucky and a win at Mississippi State, where they stalled in the red zone and settled for field goals.

Looking ahead, the Sooners must decide whether to overhaul the quarterback room or stick with the current group. If they do not land a highly rated transfer, the 2027 roster will include senior Whitt Newbauer and sophomore Bowe Bentley. Newbauer and Bentley have combined for just two passing attempts this season. Venables will need to convince fans that another year of patience is viable.

Arbuckle is in the second year of a three-year contract. The coaching staff must define a clear offensive identity before the offseason begins. The team currently struggles to create advantages for Mateer, who has lacked support in the backfield. The decision on the quarterback position and the offensive scheme will define the program’s direction for the coming year.
